Squarework Baskets - Heritage Range

  • Large rectangular storage baskets, perfect for living rooms and playrooms, made by myself using traditional techniques. Using willow grown on my local Somerset Levels, these baskets lend themselves to brown willow that I lightly steam to create a mottled effect which accentuates the textures of the different traditional English weaves. Handmade to order in a variety of colours. Baskets L56 x w40 x 30h (L22" x w16" x h12") from £140 each.
  • Known as Stake & Strand squarework baskets, I deliberately only use English methods and techniques in the staking up, bordering and in the weaves. In recent years in the UK our surviving basketmakers have often been taught only continental methods, and whilst this maybe for ease, (you have to have a decent amount of body strength to use the English staking up method!) this has resulted in few basketmakers now knowing how to, or wanting to use the traditional English method. Through 21st Century assistance in the form of a drill bit invented by Coates English Willow, I am able to stake up large baskets and get a workout!
  • Detail of double English rand weave.
  • Detail of single English rand weave.
  • Extra Large Rectangular Storage Basket made in steamed and dyed brown willow. Traditional English Stake & Strand method with double English rand weave. Basket L92 x w56 x 33h (L36" x w22" x h13") from £175.
