Ripple white willow Ose basket
Hazel frame with stripped Black Maul willow. Dimensions: Height 42cm x Width 26cm x Depth 15cm.
Taking the now endangered basketry technique of skein work forward into new sculptural forms. Many fine ribbons of skeined white willow are wrapped and layered into textured ripples that catch the light. A very rare technique that harks back to 19th Century willow fishing creels and continental fine basketry dating from the late medieval period. Each willow rod is split and shaved into skeins that are then woven onto finely worked hazel hoops and ribs. The skein work central ripple on this oval basket highlights the technique. The Ripple and the Pod basket forms are inspired by the shape and movemenbt of the antique brass cleave tool that I use to split the willow. Exhibited at the MAKE Southwest Member Exhibition 2025. Price on application. 2025.
