Contrary to popular thought, at no time during Sarah’s extensive research did she discover any rectangular picnic hamper. Oval hampers were all the rage! Neither did Buff willow, (the honey orange colour willow mostly associated with picnic hampers), exist, that type of willow only came into commercial production in the 1870s.

Showcasing the beautiful natural tones of willow, this Ose Purse is a new basket designed by Sarah.

Contemporary interpretation of a classic heritage basket, a striking contrast of natural bark colours on the outside with the purity of willow’s inner white bark in the purse’s interior. Achieved through the endangered, advanced technique of basketry skein work, each willow rod is split then meticulously shaved into fine long ribbons. Each skein is then wrapped around highly prized local Somerset Levels white willow.

Designed for it’s neat size and shape, perfect for holding handbag essentials.

Traditionally known as an Ose, Gathering, Hen or Skye basket, and documented across Europe since Medieval times, this type of frame basket involves weaving willow skeins around a series of hoops and ribs.

Please note that due to willow varieties varying in shade, each Ose Purse is unique in colouration and can range from greys, blues and purples to orange and brown. If you have a preference for a particular tonal range please state when purchasing.

Depicted in the Regency Era holding fruit or flowers, this is a highly decorative open-work basket. The prized white willow is shown to it’s advantage through the use of the advanced basketry techniques of fitching and skeining.

During Sarah’s research she discovered that these fitched open-work baskets have both what are now known as English and French bases, with the stakes of the basket either pierced into the base or scallomed on. This particular version is inspired by a basket depicted in the oil painting A Bottle of Wine c1815 by William Redmore Bigg (1755 - 1828), Judge’s Lodgings, Lancaster.
