Regency Straight Sided Picnic Hamper
Perfect for an elegant picnic, the straight sided oval hamper really showcases the English rand side weave, features a double lid and made with highly prized white willow from the Somerset Levels.
Traditional English techniques also include the rare oval underfoot tied slath base, a generous rod border, sturdy twisted handle and depending on size, toggle fastenings.
Part of the Regency Era Basket Collection. Meticulously researched for historical accuracy from paintings and prints of the era, this collection has been created for the Jane Austen Festival in Bath. Exclusively available on Sarah’s website.
Inspired by a basket depicted in the print The Angelic Angler 1781, published by Sayer & Bennett. The British Museum.
Contrary to popular thought, at no time during Sarah’s extensive research did she discover any rectangular picnic hamper. Oval hampers were all the rage! Neither did Buff willow, (the honey orange colour willow mostly associated with picnic hampers), exist, that type of willow only came into commercial production in the 1870s.
Handwoven using white willow (stripped Black Maul variety). Locally sourced from the Somerset Levels.
Large (4 person): Length 41cm x Width 32cm x Height 25cm (42cm with handle). This hamper has lids with toggle fastenings. £345.
Small (2 person): Length 35cm x Width 17cm x Height 23cm (38cm with handle). This hamper has no toggle fastenings. £280.
The Regency Straight Sided Picnic Hamper price is inclusive of UK mainland P&P. For all other countries please contact Sarah before purchasing to arrange additional shipping cost.
