Regency Oval Picnic Hamper

£265.00
1 available

Perfect for a picnic for two, this hamper features a double lid with toggle fastenings and showcases the Dickie Meadows willow variety.

Traditional English techniques include the rare oval underfoot tied slath base, English rand side weave, a generous rod border with a sturdy twisted handle.

Part of the Regency Era Basket Collection. Meticulously researched for historical accuracy from paintings and prints of the era, this collection has been created for the Jane Austen Festival in Bath. Exclusively available on Sarah’s website.

Inspired by a basket depicted in the print The Angelic Angler 1781, published by Sayer & Bennett. The British Museum.

Contrary to popular thought, at no time during Sarah’s research did she discover any rectangular picnic hamper. Oval hampers were all the rage! Neither did Buff willow, (the honey orange colour willow mostly associated with picnic hampers) exist, that type of willow only came into commercial production in the 1870s.

Handwoven using the willow variety Dickie Meadows, (that was being grown for basketmaking in England from the 18th Century onwards). Locally sourced from the Somerset Levels.

Dimensions: Length 43cm x Width 32cm x Height 20cm (38cm with handle)

The Regency Oval Picnic Hamper price is inclusive of UK mainland P&P. For all other countries please contact Sarah before purchasing to arrange additional shipping cost.
